Established in 1960 as one of the Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) during India's Second Five-Year Plan, the institute later gained the status of a National Institute of Technology in 2003, with deemed university recognition and academic autonomy. It is currently recognized as an institution of national importance under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007.

For the 2026-27 academic session, the institute offers a range of undergraduate (B.Tech) programmes in engineering disciplines, along with postgraduate programmes (M.Tech, M.Sc) and doctoral (PhD) research opportunities. The academic framework is designed to support both foundational learning and advanced research, with emphasis on technical knowledge, innovation, and practical application.

Admissions to undergraduate programmes are conducted through the national-level examination Joint Entrance Examination Main, followed by centralized counselling. Postgraduate admissions typically require qualifying scores in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or other relevant entrance tests depending on the programme. PhD admissions are based on institute-level selection processes, which may include written tests and interviews.
