The National Testing Agency (NTA) has recently announced a major change in the eligibility criteria for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024. The revised eligibility criteria for NEET-UG 2024 will allow students to take Biology as an additional subject in Class 12th. This means that students who have not opted for Biology in Class 11th and 12th but wish to pursue a medical career, can now take Biology as an additional subject in Class 12th and still be eligible for NEET-UG.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) stated in a public notification posted on Wednesday that this decision will apply to students whose applications were previously denied. The erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI) governed admission and selection to MBBS courses under Chapter II of the Regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 1997, including several revisions.
The NMC's Undergraduate Medical Education Board stated in a public notice that candidates must have completed two years of regular or continuous study in the areas of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Biotechnology in Class 11 and 12 with practical, in addition to English. The two-year study had to be completed through conventional schools rather than through open schools or as a private candidate.
The new rule will also apply to those candidates whose applications for eligibility certificates were previously denied. However, it stated that only those who become eligible after the date of the current public notification - November 22 - will be able to take the NEET UG 2024 exam.
This change is expected to greatly benefit medical aspirants who have not taken Biology as a core subject but are keen on pursuing a career in medicine. It opens up opportunities for a larger number of students to appear for NEET-UG, thus making the path to a medical career more accessible. This move is expected to encourage more students to aspire for a career in the medical field.
