A big announcement for medical aspirants! Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, has announced that National Eligibility cum Entrance Examination (NEET) will be the single entrance examination for admission to MBBS course in the country.

From 2020 onwards, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) entrance examinations for MBBS will come to an end.

Single Entrance Test For MBBS Admission

All the medical aspirants in the country have to appear for NEET exam to seek MBBS admission in any medical college or institution in the country including AIIMS and JIPMER. Currently, admission to MBBS across the country except AIIMS and JIPMER are done through NEET exam. The AIIMS and JIPMER, which function under the Health Ministry conduct their own entrance examination for admission to MBBS course.

According to sources, the Union Health Minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan, made this statement as per the National Medical Commission Act, which will come into force from 2020, onwards.

Dr Harsh Vardhan believes that through the single entrance examination-NEET, there will be common standards in the medical education sector in the country.

Last year, the Government has introduced the National Testing Agency (NTA), which is responsible for conducting the entrance examinations such as JEE Main, NEET, UGC NET, CMAT and GPAT.

Annually, over 14 lakh students appear for NEET exam. The online application window for NEET 2020 will open on December 2, 2019. The applications will be accepted until December 31, 2019. The entrance exam will be held on May 3, 2020.
