Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat said there was an urgent need to raise the standard of education in the state which was not "up to the mark in these highly competitive times".
"Considering the challenges of today's competitive times we have to pay special attention to improve the quality of primary education in Uttarakhand," Rawat said at the annual function of a government college in Doiwala.
He said the responsibility of improving the standard of primary education in the state rests not only on the shoulders of teachers but also on the government and society.
Laying emphasis on the education of girls, Rawat said equal opportunities would have to be given to them.
"There is need to create a social atmosphere where they are encouraged to come forward and grab the opportunities."
