Students, who are opting both engineering and medical streams may block the engineering slot at top colleges till they get medical slot of their liking.

It is a common trend that students in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology (PCMB) group who are uncertain about the stream shall block the engineering seats initially and shift to medical later.

New Admission process to impact engineering seats

Speaking to Indian Express, Gajanan Kharate, former dean of the engineering faculty at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) said, "It means that if a student is undecided, they will wait until engineering admissions are over and have already secured a seat, to make a choice. However, if the candidate fits the criteria, engineering colleges cannot deny admissions."

Another challenge for engineering colleges is the introduction of new admission process, which has opened 'freeze, slide or float' options to students, between colleges and faculties.

About Freeze, Slide or Float

Freeze: In this option students select the seat of choice in a particular college and confirm through freeze option, which ensures the admission is fixed.

Slide: While in this option student, who is allotted seat in a particular college and wish to continue in the same college can choose the 'slide' option. Here, he/she shall fix the college but not the branch.

Float: The 'Float' option enables student to select another college and another branch. Here, seat allotment gets canceled and students will be retained in the admission process.
