88th AIU All India Vice Chancellor's Meet

Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Odisha, hosted 88th Association of Indian Universities (AIU) on Tuesday.

The AIU organised the all India Vice Chancellor's meet and conducted National seminar on centre's flagship programme- Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), which was launched recently. The event took place at KIIT University.

Governor SC Jamir said while addressing the gathering that a steady and unified planning was required to develop education. Global standards are yet to be met in the Indian institutes he said. RUSA will aid the needs of the State-run colleges and upgrade their quality. Jamir remarked, "Instead of focusing on dedicated research and growth, most of the institutes have become examination conducting units. Physical infrastructure is of no use if not matched with competent human resource."

Chosen under grade 'A' were only 11 per cent of educational institutions while 71 per cent were selected under grade 'B' by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

Education without wisdom is dangerous, said AIU President Rajendra B Lal. A holistic development of education is required in India, he said.

A resolution demanding inclusion of private colleges under RUSA will be an outcome of the association, said Lal. H Devraj, Vice Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) said that over 33,000 colleges and 370 universities receive financial aid from Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), a major portion of which goes to 44 Central Universities across India.

Proper recommendation must be provided to UGC by AIU. This can be established to ensure quality education, he added. Jamir released AIU's ‘University News', a weekly journal about Higher Education, on the occasion. Also present at the meet were Vice Chancellor of KIIT University PP Mathur and Chancellor NL Mitra.
