Kerala Weather Alert: 11 Districts Under Orange Alert; Schools and Colleges Closed in Four Districts
Heavy rainfall continues to affect several parts of Kerala, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue Orange Alerts for 11 districts across the state. In view of the adverse weather conditions, the district administrations of Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Wayanad, and Kasaragod have declared a holiday for educational institutions on Friday to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Apart from these four districts, educational institutions in Thamarassery and Vadakara taluks of Kozhikode district will also remain closed due to the heavy rain forecast. The holiday applies to schools, anganwadis, tuition centres, religious study centres, special classes, and professional colleges. However, residential schools and residential colleges have been exempted from the holiday order and will continue to function as usual.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Orange Alerts have been issued for all districts in Kerala except Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram. An Orange Alert indicates the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall, and residents are advised to remain cautious and follow official weather advisories.
The IMD has attributed the prevailing weather conditions to the formation of an offshore trough, an elongated low-pressure area extending from south Gujarat to north Kerala at mean sea level. This weather system is expected to bring widespread rainfall along the Kerala coast and adjoining regions, with northern districts likely to witness particularly intense showers over the next few days.
Authorities have advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel to waterlogged or landslide-prone areas and to remain updated with official weather bulletins. District administrations are closely monitoring the situation and have urged educational institutions and local authorities to take all necessary precautionary measures.
The state government has also directed disaster management teams to remain on alert in vulnerable regions. Residents living near rivers, hilly areas, and coastal zones have been asked to stay vigilant as continuous rainfall could lead to localized flooding, waterlogging, and landslides.
Students and parents are advised to check announcements issued by their respective district collectors and educational institutions before travelling, as weather conditions may change rapidly. The IMD is expected to issue further updates depending on the movement of the weather system and rainfall intensity across the state. With heavy rain likely to continue over the coming days, citizens are encouraged to follow safety guidelines and rely only on official sources for weather-related information.
