Kerala Declares Holiday for Schools and Colleges on July 20 Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026 Final
The Kerala government has announced a statewide holiday for all schools and colleges on Monday, July 20, 2026, following the FIFA World Cup 2026 final. The decision was taken in recognition of the immense popularity of football in the state and the excitement surrounding the tournament's grand finale, scheduled to be played on July 19, 2026.
The announcement ensures that students, teachers, and educational staff can watch the highly anticipated final without worrying about attending classes early the next morning. Kerala, widely regarded as one of India's biggest football-loving states, has witnessed widespread public enthusiasm throughout the tournament.
Kerala Declares School and College Holiday on July 20
The decision was approved after discussions within the state government. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan directed the Education Department to declare a holiday for educational institutions across the state. Several cabinet ministers had also supported the proposal, noting that thousands of students and families were expected to stay up late to watch the championship match.
With the official notification, all government, aided, and private schools and colleges in Kerala will remain closed on July 20. The move has been welcomed by students and football enthusiasts, who view it as recognition of the sport's cultural significance in the state.
Schools in Other States Also Modify Academic Schedules
Kerala is not the only place where educational institutions have responded to the excitement surrounding the FIFA World Cup final. Although no other state has declared a statewide holiday, some schools have adjusted their academic calendars to accommodate students.
One notable example is South Point High School in Kolkata, which issued a circular earlier this month announcing changes to its examination schedule. The school postponed examinations that were originally planned for July 20 and July 21 for students of Classes VI to XII.
According to the school, the Periodic Assessment I, Pre-Midterm Test, and Unit Test I were rescheduled to avoid conflicts with the World Cup final. The revised schedule was shared with students and parents well in advance to ensure smooth conduct of the examinations.
Football Fever Across India
The FIFA World Cup 2026 has generated enormous interest among football fans across India, especially in states like Kerala and West Bengal, where the sport enjoys a massive following. Fan clubs, public screenings, and community gatherings have been organized throughout the tournament, with anticipation reaching its peak ahead of the final.
Kerala's decision to declare a holiday reflects the state's long-standing football culture and acknowledges the enthusiasm of students and sports lovers.
