Karnataka: IT Companies Asked To Continue WFH Till December 2022

The Karnataka government has asked large firms having offices on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) or Bengaluru's IT corridors to continue the Work From Home (WFH) of their employees until the end of December 2022.

This request was issued by the department of information technology, biotechnology, science and technology for the soon-to-be-started construction of Metro rail on the stretch from Silk Board to KR Puram, and then to the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

IT Companies Asked To Continue WFH Till Dec 2022

EV Ramanna Reddy, the assistant chief secretary, IT/BT, S&T department, wrote to the regional director of NASSCOM stating that BMRCL (Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited) is beginning metro construction work on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) from Central Silk Board to KR Puram, and the project could take 1.5 to 2 years to complete. The ORR is home to a number of significant Tech Parks and IT firm campuses, and it sees a lot of traffic during the day. Despite having 6 lanes and service roads, the ORR is infamous for its persistent traffic congestion.

Bengaluru's IT firms were among the first to extend Work From Home, allowing the multibillion-dollar industry to continue operating despite the pandemic-induced shutdown imposed by Covid-19.

According to the department, the IT firms, particularly those located in ORR, should extend the work-from-home option for most staff until December 2022, and/or IT parks/companies should be urged to stagger the working hours for staff that work in the office physically.

To alleviate traffic congestion, the department said that the companies who wish to restart operations should encourage their employees to utilise organisation or public buses. "We recommend you to communicate this notice to IT businesses located on ORR so that infrastructure development efforts can proceed easily, reducing future traffic congestion," Reddy stated.
