The number of women qualifying for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced 2026 has crossed the 10,000 mark for the first time in six years, according to the latest Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) report released by IIT Roorkee, the organising institute for the examination this year.

The data points to a notable rise in the proportion of female candidates clearing the highly competitive IIT entrance examination.
A total of 43,112 female candidates registered for JEE Advanced 2026. Of these, 40,562 appeared in both papers, while 10,107 women qualified. The qualification rate among registered female candidates increased to 23.4%, compared with 21.7% in 2025.
The 2026 figures mark a significant change in female participation in JEE Advanced. The number of women qualifying increased from 9,404 in 2025 to 10,107 in 2026, taking the number above 10,000. The qualification rate of 23.4% is also the highest recorded in the six-year period covered by the JIC report.
The increase occurred even though female registrations were marginally lower than the previous year's 43,413. This indicates that a larger share of women appearing for the examination met the qualifying requirements in 2026.
The longer-term trend is also notable. In 2016, 29,983 women registered and 4,570 qualified. By 2026, female registrations had risen to 43,112 and the number of qualifiers had more than doubled to 10,107.
The highest-ranked female candidate in JEE Advanced 2026 secured All India Rank 77 with a total score of 280 marks out of 360. Her subject-wise marks were 101 in Mathematics, 86 in Physics and 93 in Chemistry.
The performance reflects strong scores across all three sections of the examination and places the top female candidate among the leading performers nationally.
The JIC report also provides data on female admissions to the IITs. In 2026, 3,814 female-only seats, including female supernumerary seats, were allotted. A further 37 women secured seats through the gender-neutral pool.
The female-only allotments accounted for most of the women admitted through the dedicated pool, while the additional gender-neutral admissions show that some female candidates also secured seats through the common merit route. Overall, women accounted for about 20.22% of the 18,861 IIT seats allotted in 2026.
The figures continue the impact of the Supernumerary Seats Scheme, introduced in 2018 to increase women's representation in IIT undergraduate programmes without reducing the number of seats available to male candidates.
The rise in female qualifiers comes alongside changes in the overall category-wise JEE Advanced results. In 2026, 56,880 candidates qualified for the examination. This included 15,856 SC candidates and 6,379 ST candidates.
The qualification rate among SC candidates increased to 50.16%, compared with 40.41% in 2025, while the ST qualification rate rose to 42.14%, from 33.99% a year earlier. In contrast, the qualification rate for the General category fell to 39.8%, while the OBC-NCL rate declined to 17.5%.
The JIC report notes that qualifying criteria were relaxed to ensure that at least twice the number of candidates qualified compared with the number of available seats in each category. The improvement in women's qualification rate therefore needs to be viewed alongside the broader changes in qualifying criteria and the distribution of candidate scores.
Qualifying JEE Advanced does not automatically guarantee an IIT seat. After the result, eligible candidates must participate in the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling process and submit their preferred institutes and courses. The official JEE Advanced admission information states that candidates with a JEE Advanced 2026 rank can participate in the common seat allocation process for IIT admissions.
In 2026, 52,559 of the 56,880 qualifiers registered for JoSAA counselling and filled choices, while 4,321 did not participate in the choice-filling process. Seat allotment depends on rank, category, gender pool where applicable, course preferences and available seats.
The latest figures indicate a gradual increase in women's presence across the JEE Advanced and IIT admission pipeline. Female registrations have risen over the last decade, while the number and proportion of women qualifying have also increased. In 2026, nearly one in four registered female candidates qualified, taking the qualification rate to its highest level in the six years covered by the report.
At the admission stage, the share of women has remained close to the 20% level, supported by female-only supernumerary seats. The 2026 data shows both greater female participation in the entrance examination and continued representation of women in IIT undergraduate admissions.
