World's First Private Tribal University Opens In Kota, India

In May 2023, the city of Kota, famously known for its IIT-NEET coaching centers, witnessed the establishment of the world's first private tribal university, Jai Minesh Adivasi University (JMAU). This innovative institution, sitting on a 30-acre campus in the Ranpur industrial area, was the brainchild of R D Meena and Laxman Meena, two retired bureaucrats. Their vision was to create a hub for tribal studies, offering not just education but also focusing on research and policy changes to uplift tribal communities. Now, within just a year, the university boasts 600 students enrolled in various academic and vocational programs.

The university, named after the deity revered by Rajasthan's Meena community, aims to provide quality education at affordable rates. It seeks to serve students from all societal sections, including international attendees. It has received significant support from the state government and the community, including a generous donation of Rs. 25 lakh from Lok Sabha Speaker and Kota-Bundi MP Om Birla and contributions from 2,500 community members. Additionally, each of the 200 MLAs in the state assembly has been authorized to donate Rs 10 lakh from their MLA funds to support the institution. This financial backing underscores the wide-ranging support for the university's mission.

An Inclusive Approach to Education

JMAU has taken significant steps to ensure inclusivity and access to education for the tribal community, reserving 50 percent of its seats for tribal children. Dr. Mukti Parashar, Dean of Drawing and Painting, highlighted the inclusion of these elements as crucial to the university's educational approach.

Moreover, the university extends beyond traditional academic offerings by providing free coaching for civil service exams. This initiative is particularly beneficial for students aiming to enter public service, like Priya Meena, an Arts student who is utilizing this opportunity to prepare for her civil service examinations. R D Meena, co-founder and president of the All India Shri Meena Social and Educational Committee, has expressed his vision for JMAU to become a global center for tribal studies. With tribal communities making up 6 percent of the global population across approximately 50 countries, the university aims to play a pivotal role in enhancing research and influencing policy for the betterment of these communities. "In the next 30-40 years, this university will be a global hub for tribal studies, driving research and policy for the betterment of these communities," Meena stated with confidence.

Dr. Devendra Acharya, Head of the Department of Physiotherapy, emphasized the institution's efforts to maintain a nominal fee structure while offering comprehensive educational programs.
