ISRO's National Remote Sensing Centre Enhances Lightning Forecasting Accuracy

ISRO announced on Tuesday that its National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) has made significant progress in the immediate forecasting of lightning events across India. This achievement utilizes data gathered from India's geostationary satellites. The ability to forecast lightning events with a lead time of around 2.5 hours was developed by integrating additional data such as Land Surface Temperature (LST) and wind patterns. This method has significantly improved the predictability of when and how intensely lightning will strike.

ISRO Enhances Lightning Forecasting Accuracy

The process of predicting atmospheric lightning is complex, involving the analysis of various meteorological factors influenced by convective processes in the troposphere. Factors such as surface radiation, temperature fluctuations, and wind dynamics play crucial roles in the onset of these convective phenomena.
