Leather Process Technology Area, also known as Tannery division has been playing a key role in the growth of the tanning industry in India. This course provides trained manpower and appropriate technologies for the production of varieties of finished leathers. In the seventies when the government of India banned the export of raw and semi processed leathers, the Tannery division again played a lead role by providing unit specific cleaner processing options for reducing pollution loads in tannery effluents, when the Apex Court of the country closed down more than 300 tanneries in the state of Tamil Nadu. Students who have cleared their 12th class exam with Physics, Chemistry, Maths subjects are eligible for this course.

The Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology (GCELT) is a pioneer in the field of education and research on Leather Technology. It was originally started under the name 'Calcutta Research Tannery' in the year 1919, on the recommendation of Munitions Board set up by the government of India immediately after the first World War, with the aim of exploring Indigenous resources of hides, skins and tanning materials for the purpose of production of leather and leather goods and development of leather industry in the country. In August 1955 this college was affiliated to the University of Calcutta for imparting training in B.Sc (Tech) course in Leather Technology and it has been recognised as a professional college under the University of Calcutta. The latest development and new schemes undertaken by the college has turned it into a big organisation in the field of Leather Technology.
