Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has taken India amidst the top 15 rank in Times Higher Education BRICS and Emerging Economies University Rankings.
IISc being placed 14th in the ranks has meritted on basis of teaching, international outlook, research and knowledge transfer. Last year IISc was in the top 20.
To add to the good news, India has 27 industries in the top 300 for 2017 ranking. However, China continues to be on the top most universities, surpassing other countries. It has 52 places in the top 300 and six places in the top 10.
"India is making great strides. Its flagship university, the Indian Institute of Science, breaks into the top 15 for the first time this year, thanks to the improved scores for its teaching environment and research influence while the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay climbs three places to 26th, its highest ever rank due to improved scores across all of the five pillars of the underlying methodology," said Editor of Times Higher Education World University Rankings Phil Baty.
India is aiming at overtaking Taiwan in the top 200 countries for the next year.

In the 100-200 list, there are IIT Guwahati, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, University of Delhi, Punjab University, Tezpur University, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Aligarh Muslim University, University of Calcutta, Sri Venkateswara University, NIT Rourkela and BITS Pilani.
In 201-250 list there are Acharya Nagarjuna University, Amrita University, Osmania University and Andhra University and in the 250-300 list are Amity University, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Manipal University and Cochin University of Science and Technology.
However, due to heavy competition, the number of universities fairing well have reduced and gone down except for India and China.
