Indian Architecture Students Explore Italy

Esperienza is the avantgarde initiative by DQ Labs for students to experience exquisite icons all around the globe.

This year, Esperienza sailed through Italian cities with the Indian bandwagon who are set out to conquer the field of design and architecture. Cities with consummate art and architecture which reflect ideas that have shaped through times like Renaissance, and the World Wars are indispensable sources of inspiration for aspirants in Architecture and Design. Esperienza2014 was an effort to break the monotony of the general trend that education has come to be associated with. It set out to bring the creative conundrum to the spirit of exploration to craft the ultimate experience!

In collaboration with renowned designers, artists and architects local to the destination, DQ Labs organised a study tour for 15 budding architects which explored the cities of Rome, Vatican, Florence, Milan and Venice. This tour managed to capture all the vintage iotas that are specifically eminent in the termini of the itinerary.

  • Not only were ancient, chronical and classical places covered, but modern and contemporary architecture was also observed.
  • To name a few, in Milan, the Unicredit Tower (By Ar. Cesar Pelli), GaeAulenti square (By Ar. Cesar Pelli), Corso Como residential buildings (By Ar. Munoz &Albin/CinoZucchi) and Fiera Milano (By Ar. Massimo Fuksaas) were eminent sights of modern architecture.

Indian Architecture Students Visit Universities in Italy:
The enthusiastic clique was also privileged to visit universities and interact with faculty to learn about different facts of architecture. At the largest university of Italy, Politecnico de Milano (Milan), they were honoured to interact with Professor Maurizio Meriggi and were apprenticed with enlightening ideas and were inspired by his vista.

At the design-themed UniversitàIuav di Venezia (Venice), the students interacted with Professor Serena Maffioletti and fuelled their awareness about architecture and design. The team of Esperienza 2014 also explored the Council of Architecture in Rome and were honoured to interact with their officials and gain some of their insights into architecture and design.

Architecture Students Visit Architecture Exhibitions in Italy:
To top it all, the coterie attended some of the world's biggest architecture exhibitions and gained first-hand experience in infrastructural marvels. At Fiera Milano (By Ar. Massimo Fuksaas), the students witnessed one of the unbelievable pinnacles of architecture. They were fortunate to catch sight of the exalted Viscom exhibition that illuminated this monument. In Venice, they also encountered a concoction of perspectives from architects all over the world in La Bieannale International Architecture Exhibition.

Monuments, museums, streets and plazas of historical significance as well as contemporary art and architecture, everything was thoroughly combed. The network of professionals that DQ Labs has amassed was key to the exposure of the participant and added tremendous value to the travelling experience.

It is in this light that DQ Labs is initiating an effort to get India's participation to showcase its architectural visions and representations at a global platform during the next La Biennale exhibition 2016.

Adish SM, 2nd year Architecture student from BVB, Hubli:
"For a designer, the first and foremost appetizer is inspiration. Being exposed to one single culture and style of architecture throughout one's short life narrows down our perspective. This trip has provided not only a treasure chest of ideas and memories, but also a lifetime worth of inspiration. Through the course of nine days, we admired and absorbed the marvels of design and architecture before our eyes and learn to distinguish the contemporary from the classic. We had the opportunity to fathom the marvels of the present and enjoy the masterpieces of the past. There is no better way than to learn to from the legends themselves. And as a cherry on the cake, the interactions we had at different institutes with several experienced personnel and the mind-blowing La Biennale exhibition has changed the way I perceive architecture."

Amal Lal, 4th year Architecture student from COA, Cochin:
"Experience is one of the key ingredients to enlightenment. Taking part in Esperienza was the best way to utilise my opportunity. For student architects like us, this was the best way to realize the world outside from all the perspectives - architecture, art, culture, traditions, regulations and much more. This helped us to observe and discover what is lacking in a developing country like ours and all the things we, the next generation architects, must be aware of. Discussions and visits to different universities helped to learn more about their approaches and attitudes to architecture and conservation. The ideas of an architect are influenced by the things he sees every day and the way he perceives these things. In that way, the architectural Biennale has helped us to build up new levels of thoughts and concepts inspired from the exhibits and experiments there."

Nikhil Sharma, 4th year Architecture student from MSRIT, Bangalore:
From losing everything to finding myself somewhere alone in Roma, I have loved each and every part of this trip! In a country with such rich culture and artistic value, surely, I would not have been the only one who imagined staying in Italy for the rest of my life. From Termini to Barbarini and from Barbarini to Colosseo, every part of the journey was extraordinary. I have not only gained perspective, but I have also learnt how to think rationally and understand how important it is for a one to realise his/her importance and do something for one's country. Grazie..
