India Celebrates National Technology Day Today

Every year, on this day, the Technology Development Board of India awards various individuals with national awards for their contribution to indigenous technology.

Every year, National Technology Day' is celebrated across India on May 11; being commemorated to memorize the anniversary of Shakti, the Pokhran nuclear test held on 11 May 1998. This day is celebrated as a symbol of quest for scientific inquiry and technological creativity, and their translation into the integration of science, society, and industry. The day glorifies the importance of science in a day to day life.

 

Why is National Technology Day Celebrated Today?

On 11 May 1998, India conducted a series of nuclear tests in the Pohkran, Rajasthan. The tests were successful and since that day India has had drastic breakthroughs in the field of technology and science- like India's moon mission 'Chandrayan' and the launch of 104 satellites with one rocket.

National Technology Day is a very special day for Indian Technology since 1999. It is so significant because India achieved a huge technological advancement on the day. The first, indigenous aircraft "Hansa-3" was test flown at Bangalore on this day. Not only this, India also performed successful test firing of the Trishul missile on the same day. India also executed three successful nuclear tests, carried out at Pokhran, in Rajasthan May 11. And it made India the 6th country to join the nuclear club.

Tweeting about the importance of the day, PM Modi said, "Greetings to everyone, especially our industrious scientists and those passionate about technology, on National Technology Day."
