IITs and NITs to have common online seat allocation process

Aspirants for IITs and NITs will have a common seat allocation process this year through a single website. Ranks in both JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced) will be taken into consideration during the online seat allocation process.

A joint meeting of IITs and the NITs has been called by the ministry of human resources and development (MHRD) on Thursday to discuss the final nuances. A notification to this effect is expected to be out by March 31.

A section of professors from the IITs, however, still have their reservations about the common process and would like to give their approval only after the details are discussed in the meeting.

IITs & NITs to have common online seat allocation

This year, once the process is finalized, students will have to fill a common form for their choices. This year, a student's first and second choices can be computer science at IIT-Bombay and IIT-Delhi respectively, and third choice can be the same course at NIT-Surathkal and so on and so forth, said a professor.

IIT-Bombay will be the organizing institute this year among the premium IITs. The institute's director Devang Khakhar confirmed that the seat allocation process will be common for both IITs and NITs this year.

"We have been working on it for a year. The notification on how the students will have to fill their options and the details on the process of allotment using both the ranks will be released by the end of this month," said Khakhar. The process will be carried out by the National Informatics Centre.

"The details should be acceptable to all. Over 13 lakh students will be part of the common process. There has to be an algorithm that needs to be worked out to carry out such a complicated process," said an IIT professor. The common seat allocation would help reduce vacancies in these technical institutes after the admission process.
