The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar has opened applications for its PhD programs for the January 2025 intake under the academic year 2024-25. Interested candidates can apply through the official website by September 23, 2024. Each department requires a separate application form.

IIT Ropar offers a range of PhD programs, including Regular PhD, PMRF PhD (Lateral/Direct), and Part-Time PhD under categories like Sponsored PhD and External Registration Program (ERP). ERP allows candidates to pursue their research while continuing their work in their respective organizations. Fellowships up to ₹2 lakh are available for students to participate in national and international conferences.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must hold a degree in MTech/ME/MD/MSc/MBA/MA/MBBS/BTech/BE or an equivalent qualification. Those applying with BTech/BE degrees need a valid score in GATE/CSIR/UGC-NET/DST-INSPIRE/JEST/NBHM, or any other recognized national fellowship exam.
PhD fields in the sciences include Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. Humanities & Social Sciences cover disciplines like Psychology, English Literature, Economics, Linguistics, and Interdisciplinary Studies.

- Verify the account through the email verification link.
- Fill out the application form and submit the required documents.
- Make sure to review and submit your final application. If edits are needed, use the "Edit" feature before final submission.
Candidates will receive notifications via email if they are shortlisted for the written test or interview. Applicants must bring their submitted application and relevant documents (both original and photocopies) to the test/interview.
Selection Process
Candidates who meet the basic eligibility criteria may be shortlisted for the written test or interview conducted by the respective department. Final selection depends on the performance in these assessments. However, meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee an invitation for further evaluation.
PhD candidates are admitted under several categories:
- Institute Fellowship: Research assistantships or fellowships as per Ministry of Education norms.
- Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme: Eligible candidates may receive a fellowship under this scheme.
- Government/Semi-Government Fellowship Holders: Includes candidates with fellowships like PMRF, CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, and DST-INSPIRE.
- Fellowship Through Project (FTP): Available for research fellows working on institute projects.
- Self-Financed (SF): Admits candidates without financial support from IIT Ropar, though DST-INSPIRE provisional fellowship holders may apply here.
Part-Time PhD Opportunities
The External Registration Program (ERP) allows professionals from R&D organizations or industry to pursue a PhD while employed. These candidates must have a local supervisor from their organization and an institute supervisor from IIT Ropar. Permanent non-teaching staff at IIT Ropar are also eligible for part-time PhD programs. However, temporary or outsourced employees are not eligible under this category.
