Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur will be increasing the number of female students in the undergraduate level. This initiative is taken up so that girls will have more scope in the top notch institution.

Partha Pratim Chakrabarti, IITKGP Director said, " It is a fact that women are not getting the same opportunity... that a male candidate gets. Even these days, some conservative families refrain from sending daughters to institutions like IIT. We have to break that. We have to give some more scope to women." The director made the comment at the at the recent convocation ceremony at the IITKGP.

IIT KGP to Increase the Number of Female Students

While focusing on the point that women only make up 9 per cent of the total number of students, the scholar said that 3-4 premier institutes for technology, will have a discussion where they would try yo figure out a way to promote women without the reducing of seats, as per according to Ministry of Human Resource Department.

He further said, "It will not be reservation. Technically it will be for promotion of women, giving additional seats without reducing opportunity for others and by maintaining quality."

Considering the fact that this year's gold medals included many girls, this move would help provide equality of gender in the IIT student community.

"While women comprise less than 10 per cent of the IIT KGP undergraduate student force, you have seen that around 40 per cent of award winners in this convocation were girls. This shows women are more serious and their intelligence is equal. They only need more opportunities" the director further said.
