Imagine stepping into a virtual classroom where abstract mathematical equations transform into three-dimensional interactive experiences, and complex science concepts come to life right before your eyes. This is not a futuristic dream-it is the reality of education in Assam, thanks to IIT Guwahati's groundbreaking initiative, "Gyandhara."

In collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Department of Education, Assam, IIT Guwahati has launched India's first VR-enabled metaverse platform for school students. Designed for PM Shri Adarsh Vidyalayas, this initiative aims to make learning more engaging, immersive, and accessible in local languages.
What is Gyandhara?
"Gyandhara" is not just a digital tool; it is a virtual universe of knowledge. Led by Dr. Keyur Sorathia, an associate professor at IIT Guwahati, this platform integrates virtual reality (VR) technology to create interactive 3D learning environments.
Students aged 13 to 18, covering classes 8 to 12, will experience a new dimension of education where learning is no longer limited to textbooks and blackboards.
What subjects will be covered?
The initiative will focus on mathematics, science, and social science, turning abstract topics into interactive experiences that students can visualize and explore.
The pilot phase of Gyandhara will be implemented in 56 PM Shri schools across Assam, with future plans for a nationwide expansion, particularly in the Northeast region.
Why is this a game-changer?
Traditional teaching methods often struggle to explain complex concepts, making subjects like physics and geometry difficult for students. With Gyandhara, lessons will be:
- Visual and interactive - Students will see concepts in action rather than simply memorizing them.
- Available in local languages - Making learning more accessible and easier to understand.
- Collaborative - Encouraging group discussions and interactive problem-solving.
With cutting-edge VR technology, Gyandhara is set to transform the way students engage with education. As India's first immersive educational metaverse, this initiative is a significant step toward the future of learning.
What's Next?
The success of this project in Assam could pave the way for VR-based education in schools across India and beyond. As the education sector embraces technological innovation, Gyandhara stands as a milestone in making learning more engaging, accessible, and future-ready.
