The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has taken a significant step towards addressing the global surge in demand for Generative AI expertise by unveiling its six-month Certificate Programme in Generative AI as part of its Continuing Education Programme (CEP). This initiative aims to arm professionals with comprehensive skills in artificial intelligence and position India as a leader in technological innovation, thus narrowing the expanding AI talent gap in the country.

The programme promises an in-depth exploration of advanced AI methodologies, focusing particularly on Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPT, BERT, and T5. Participants will delve into the forefront of AI technology, including Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF), Vision-Language Models (VLMs), and the ethical deployment of AI. The curriculum is structured around six specialized modules, covering a range of topics from Mathematical Foundations for ML and Natural Language Processing to Generative AI for Text and Vision, and Responsible AI.
Empowering India's AI Aspirations
The potential economic impact of AI on the global stage is immense, with a PwC report suggesting that AI could add $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. India, in particular, stands to gain significantly, with projections indicating that Generative AI could boost the country's GDP by $359 to $438 billion by 2029-30. This would represent an increase of 5.9% to 7.2% of its GDP. Recognizing this potential, the Indian government has committed ₹10,300 crore to enhance the AI ecosystem, through initiatives like IndiaAI Compute Capacity and Innovation Centres. Despite these efforts, a substantial skills gap remains, as 72% of companies report shortages in AI, data analytics, and cybersecurity expertise.
Professor Tanmoy Chakraborty, Rajiv Khemani Young Faculty Chair Professor in AI at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Yardi School of Artificial Intelligence, IIT Delhi, emphasized the impact of the Certificate Programme. "The Certificate Programme in Generative AI equips professionals with future-ready skills, enabling India to emerge as a global AI hub. Participants in the programme will benefit from practical experience with leading-edge tools such as Python, NumPy, Pandas, PyTorch, and TensorFlow, along with mastering NLP tools like NLTK and spaCy for efficient data processing. This hands-on approach will prepare learners for roles in high demand, such as AI Research Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer, Data Scientist with Generative AI Expertise, NLP Engineer/Scientist, and Generative AI Specialist.
Interactive Learning and Industry Relevance
The delivery of the programme will be via live online interactive sessions, presented in a Direct-to-Device (D2D) format. This includes industry-relevant case studies, simulations, projects, and assignments, ensuring a rich learning experience. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity for an exclusive one-day campus immersion at IIT Delhi, offering them firsthand insight into the institution's esteemed academic and research excellence.
