The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay) has introduced a new Bachelor of Technology (BTech) program in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR). This innovative course is designed to address real-world problems through effective decision-making models and caters to students with interests in data science, computing, and decision analysis.

Understanding IEOR
Operations Research (OR) involves using mathematical and decision models to solve complex issues related to planning, scheduling, and control within various systems. Industrial Engineering (IE), on the other hand, focuses on the design, analysis, improvement, and management of industrial and service systems. By integrating these disciplines, the BTech IEOR program aims to provide students with a comprehensive skill set to tackle diverse challenges.
The BTech IEOR curriculum at IIT Bombay covers a broad spectrum of subjects across basic sciences, humanities and social sciences, and engineering and technology. The program begins with an introduction to IE and OR, emphasizing fundamental themes and honing problem-solving and systems-thinking skills. Core subjects include:
Probability and Statistics
- Optimization
- Data Structures and Algorithms
- Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning
- Simulation
- Industrial Systems
- Operations Analysis
- Logistics and Supply Chain Management
Students will also participate in six core labs: four computational labs focusing on algorithms and programming, optimization, data analytics and AI/ML, and simulation, along with two hardware labs dedicated to industrial engineering and digital enterprise systems.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the IEOR program can pursue careers in various sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, business analytics, e-commerce, and healthcare. Their skills are highly valued in industries including technology innovation centers, research labs, and academia. IEOR graduates are adept at analyzing processes and providing solutions, making them valuable in data science roles.
The intake for the BTech IEOR program at IIT Bombay is approximately 36 seats. Potential job profiles for BTech IEOR graduates include:
- Industrial Engineer
- Operations Researcher
- Data Analyst
- Management Consultant
- Supply Chain/Logistics Analyst
- Operations Manager
- Financial/Risk Analyst
- Quantitative Analyst
- Quality Engineer
- Project Manager
Postgraduate Prospects
The program also prepares graduates for advanced studies such as Master's degrees or PhD programs at top global institutions. Postgraduate study options after a BTech in IEOR include advanced degrees in IE/OR or related engineering disciplines, as well as management or interdisciplinary fields like Data Science or Artificial Intelligence.
Top companies across various sectors, including e-commerce giants like Amazon and Flipkart, retail companies, technology firms, automotive manufacturers, airlines, consulting firms, financial services, transportation and logistics companies, and startups, hire IEOR graduates.
