The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal (IISER Bhopal) has opened applications for its PhD programme for the January 2027 semester. Applications are currently being accepted online, and candidates interested in the Physics PhD programme must complete the application process by October 12, 2026.

The official IISER Bhopal admission portal confirms October 12 as the last date for receiving online applications.
While the January 2027 PhD admission cycle covers multiple departments, including Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Data Science and Engineering, Economic Sciences, and Humanities and Social Sciences, the current Physics admission notice has specific eligibility and qualifying-exam requirements.
For the Physics PhD programme, candidates should have an MSc or MTech degree in a relevant discipline with a minimum of 60% marks or a CGPA/CPI of 7.0 on a 10-point scale. The requirement applies to the overall percentage or CGPA and not only the marks obtained in the major subject.
Applicants must also have a valid qualifying score or fellowship in an examination recognised by IISER Bhopal. The institute lists GATE, UGC-JRF, CSIR-JRF, JEST, INSPIRE-PhD, JGEEBILS or another recognised score among the accepted qualifications. This requirement does not apply to candidates holding an MTech degree.
As per the institute's general PhD eligibility rules, relaxation in the minimum marks requirement is available to reserved-category candidates in accordance with the prescribed norms. IISER Bhopal may also apply additional departmental screening criteria depending on the number of applications received.
The Department of Physics offers research opportunities across a wide range of areas. These include ultrafast optics, terahertz spectroscopy, magnetism, nanomaterials, superconductivity, atomic and molecular physics, quantum sensing, nanophotonics, condensed matter physics, quantum information, cosmology, black holes and holography, particle physics, dark matter, neutrino physics and gravitational-wave research.
Candidates should review the research areas and faculty expertise before applying to identify suitable areas of interest.
After the application deadline, submitted applications will be screened and shortlisted candidates will be informed about further stages. IISER Bhopal states that shortlisted candidates may be subject to departmental screening before being called for the interview or other selection stages. The institute will announce further dates in due course.
Eligible candidates can apply through the official IISER Bhopal admission portal. Applicants should select the relevant PhD department, complete the online form, provide academic and qualifying-examination details, upload the required documents and submit the application before the deadline.
The last date to submit the IISER Bhopal PhD application for the January 2027 semester is October 12, 2026. Candidates are advised to complete the process before the deadline and carefully check the department-specific eligibility requirements.
