IISc Bengaluru Tops India in THE World University Rankings 2027

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has emerged as the highest-ranked Indian institution in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027, securing a joint 254th position globally. The latest edition of the ranking evaluates 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories. India has recorded its largest representation so far, with 143 universities included in the 2027 rankings.

IISc is the only Indian institution to feature in the global top 300 in this edition. Its overall score is 57.0, with its performance measured across teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook.

IISc Bengaluru Ranking 2027: Performance Across Indicators

According to the published THE data, IISc recorded a 62.1 score for teaching and 58.6 for research environment. Its score for research quality was 51.5, while it recorded 98.0 in industry and 31.1 in international outlook. These indicators form part of THE's broader assessment framework for research-intensive universities.

The ranking provides a comparative assessment of universities using indicators related to their academic environment, research activity, industry links and international engagement. Students and institutions can use the results to examine how universities are positioned across different areas rather than relying only on the overall rank.

Other Indian Universities in THE Rankings 2027

Several other Indian institutions have secured positions across the global ranking bands. Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences is placed in the 326-350 band, making it the next-highest Indian entry. Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences is in the 451-500 band.

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and KIIT University are both placed in the 501-550 band. THE's India rankings page lists these institutions among the leading Indian entries in the 2027 edition.

The 2027 results also include Indian institutions across several other ranking bands, reflecting the increasing number of universities represented from the country.

Oxford Retains No. 1 Position Globally

At the global level, the University of Oxford has retained the top position in the THE World University Rankings 2027, while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is ranked second. Princeton University and Stanford University share third place in the latest edition.

Asian universities also have a stronger presence among the leading institutions. Tsinghua University is ranked 11th globally, while the National University of Singapore (NUS) is among the world's top 15. THE said Asian universities have moved ahead of mainland Europe in overall representation among the leading institutions in the 2027 edition.

India in THE World University Rankings 2027

India is the most represented country in Asia in the latest ranking, with 143 universities featured. The expanded participation provides a wider view of Indian higher education across different types of institutions and ranking bands.

For IISc Bengaluru, the 254th global position places it at the top of India's entries in the THE World University Rankings 2027. The results highlight the institute's performance across teaching, research, industry engagement and international outlook while also showing the varied positions secured by other Indian universities.
