The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has introduced an exciting new certificate programme in fashion design. Launched by the School of Vocational Education and Training, this initiative aims to equip students with essential skills for the apparel industry, enhancing their employability.

The new programme is designed to impart fundamental knowledge and understanding of fashion design, along with insights into the fashion industry both in India and globally. According to an IGNOU statement, the course is tailored to meet the growing demands of the fashion sector.
Interested candidates can register online at ignou.ac.in. The programme is open to students who have completed Class 12. It offers flexibility in terms of completion time, allowing students to finish the certificate course within six months to two years. The medium of instruction will be either English or Hindi, catering to a diverse student base.
The Government of India has set ambitious targets to achieve $300 billion in textile exports by 2024-25 and create an additional 35 million jobs in the textile sector. IGNOU has acknowledged that these goals cannot be met through the existing formal training system alone. To address this, IGNOU is adopting a blended learning approach, aligning the programme with industry requirements to ensure its effectiveness and relevance.
The curriculum is comprehensive, covering basic knowledge and skills in pattern making and sewing techniques. It aims to provide a fundamental understanding of fashion design and the broader fashion industry. Key areas of focus include:
Basic Knowledge of Fashion Design: Foundational principles and practices.
Understanding the Global and Indian Fashion Industry: Insights into the dynamics of the fashion market.
Skills in Digital Technology and CAD: Training in computer-aided design.
Pattern Making and Sewing Techniques: Practical skills in creating garments.
Entrepreneurship and Communication Skills: Developing business and interpersonal skills.
IGNOU's new certificate programme in fashion design is set to play a pivotal role in preparing students for successful careers in the textile sector. By aligning the curriculum with industry needs and incorporating practical skills, the programme supports the Government of India's goals for textile exports and employment. Students interested in pursuing a career in fashion design can now take advantage of this innovative educational opportunity.
