How Your Sports Medals Can Help You in Securing Seat in India's Best IIT

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has introduced the 'Sports Excellence Admission' (SEA) initiative, starting from the academic year 2024-2025. IIT Madras is the first IIT in India to offer admissions for sportspersons in its undergraduate programs. This initiative aims to recognize and reward talented students who have excelled in sports, encouraging them to pursue higher education while continuing their athletic pursuits.

Objective and Benefits

According to IIT Madras, this step aims to enable deserving students to balance their academic and sports careers. The Institute will offer two supernumerary seats per undergraduate program for Indian nationals, with one of these seats exclusively reserved for female students.

"Sports not only teaches youth to maintain good health and disciplined life but also the mental maturity to handle success and failures, and how to transform failures to success with perseverance and hard work. The sports quota will ensure the presence of youth with these qualities on our campus, who will be role models for other students," said Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras.

Admission Process

Students wishing to apply through SEA must qualify for the JEE (Advanced) examination. However, the admission process will not be conducted through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) portal. Instead, it will be via a separate portal operated by IIT Madras, which launched on June 11, 2024.

Candidates eligible for this initiative must have secured a position in the Common Rank List (CRL) or a category-wise rank list in the JEE (Advanced) 2024. Additionally, they must have won at least one medal in any National or International-level sports competition in the last four years.

Sports Rank List (SRL)

A separate 'Sports Rank List' (SRL) will be prepared based on the total score obtained by the candidates from their performance in a specified list of sports. Seat allotment will be conducted based on this list.

The SEA initiative by IIT Madras is expected to bring a unique dimension to the campus environment by fostering a balance between academics and sports. This pioneering move by IIT Madras underscores the importance of holistic development and aims to produce well-rounded individuals who excel both in academics and sports.
