How was the XAT 2014 exam conducted?

The Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) 2014 was held on 5th January. Students found surprise elements in the examination paper.

XLRI, Jamshedpur, is set to conduct Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT 2014) for management programmes admissions in around 116 B-Schools across India.

A total of 89,328 candidates registered for XAT 2014.

XAT 2014 had 103 questions to be answered in 160 minutes and 20 minutes extra for essay writing.

Test was divided into four sections:

  • Section 1: Verbal and Logical Ability - 28 questions.
  • Section 2: Decision Making - 24 questions.
  • Section 3: Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation - 31 questions.
  • Section 4: General Awareness - 30 questions and another section was Essay Writing.

How was the XAT 2014 exam conducted?


Students found surprise questions in Verbal Ability section which had questions based on core grammar concepts in the form of fill in the blanks on usage of verbs, subject, verb agreement, appropriate words, synonyms, prepositions, articles.

This sections also had passages of 500 words. Hence, more than half of Verbal ability section was covered by Reading Comprehension. Passages were moderate to difficult and had rich literary language with penetrating questions.

There were two questions on jumbled paragraphs in XAT 2014. The questions were easier than in CAT, but more difficult than the ones appeared earlier in XAT.

Decision Making section was time consuming. Some of the questions had incomplete information and answers had closed choices.

The Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation section was also difficult. This section had contained questions from Arithmetic, Algebra, Probability, Geometry.

The General Awareness section questions were based on Business, Economics, Finance, National and International Affairs, Committees, Appointments, Books and Authors and other Conventional topics.

Most of the aspirants felt difficult to answer the XAT 2014 paper. XAT 2014 had the questions, which were asked directly and indirectly related to such topics.

For Essay Writing, candidates have to write about topic on "Beautiful Things are not to be Touched but are Felt".

Overall XAT 2014 examination was moderate in difficult level.
