Honorary doctorate conferred on 'Super 30' founder Anand Kumar

Coimbatore, Dec 15: Anand Kumar, founder of 'Super 30', was today conferred Honorary Doctorate of Science (DSc) by Karpagam University, in recognition of his pioneering work with students from underprivileged sections of society.

The University confers DSc on persons of eminence for their outstanding contribution to the society in various fields and this year; Anand Kumar was chosen, Vice Chancellor Dr S Subramanian said in a release.

Experiencing acute poverty in his student days, which prevented him from going to Cambridge University for higher education, Kumar made it a mission to help wards of people from underprivileged sections at his Super-30 and help them realise their dreams and join the mainstream, Subramanian said.

A couple of months ago, he was invited to Cambridge, MIT and Stanford to deliver lectures, the release said. Launched in 2002, 308 students from Super-30 have made it to IIT of 360 who were enroled in the institution. [Use skills to ensure country's growth: Super30 founder to IIT students]

At 'Super 30', food and accommodation are provided free of cost, apart from round-the-clock mentoring. Anand's entire family is involved with 'Super 30', for which he takes no financial help from any government or private agency, the release said.

On the honour, Anand said it would give him strength and encouragement to carry on with his mission. "When I was a student, my father dreamt of seeing me acquire higher education, but quirk of fate did not let it happen. Today, the university has conferred this degree, which is honour," Anand said.

'Super 30' is an initiative of Anand Kumar in Bihar, to train 30 students every year for writing the Joint Entrance Examination for admission into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), since 2003.
