Himachal Pradesh Under Orange Alert Till July 23: School Closure Decision Left to District Administrations
The Himachal Pradesh government has authorised district administrations to decide whether schools should remain open or closed amid the ongoing spell of heavy rainfall across the state. Orange Alert Issued Till July 23
The Shimla Meteorological Centre has issued an Orange Alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across Himachal Pradesh from July 19 to July 23, 2026. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that persistent rainfall may increase the risk of landslides, flash floods, waterlogging, and rising river levels in several districts.
Authorities have advised residents to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in hilly and vulnerable regions.
Heavy Rain Recorded in Several Districts
Many parts of Himachal Pradesh have already witnessed significant rainfall over the past 24 hours.
Some of the highest rainfall recorded includes:
- Jot (Chamba): 109 mm
- Kangra: 77.4 mm
- Palampur: 38 mm
The continuous rainfall has affected normal life in several areas, with reports of blocked roads and minor landslides emerging from different districts.

Unlike previous weather-related closures announced across the state, the government has left the decision to individual district administrations.
