Guwahati Schools Closed Until September 27 Amidst Intense Heatwave

In response to the intense heatwave sweeping through Assam, authorities have decided to close schools in the Kamrup Metro district to protect students' health. This precautionary closure, affecting all government, provincial, and private educational institutions, will take place from September 24 to September 27, 2024. The decision follows reports of students suffering from heat-related illnesses, such as dehydration and fainting. These incidents raised concerns about student safety, prompting swift action from local officials.

Guwahati Schools Closed Until September 27

The District Commissioner of Kamrup Metro granted the necessary approval to implement this temporary closure, highlighting the urgent need to safeguard students during this period of extreme weather.

The move to suspend classes was announced after the District Primary Education Officer and District Mission Coordinator of the Axom Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Mission documented a surge in heat-induced health problems among students. Authorities have stated that schools are expected to reopen on September 28, 2024, with further guidance to be issued depending on weather conditions. An official statement reinforced the decision, stating, "The health and well-being of our students is our foremost concern. This temporary closure will mitigate the harmful effects of the extreme heat on their health."

The Kamrup Metropolitan District, which includes Guwahati city, has been experiencing unusually high temperatures in recent days. The India Meteorological Department reported a significant temperature spike, with the maximum reaching 37.9 degrees Celsius-5.9 degrees above the average-and the minimum climbing to 28.2 degrees Celsius, 3.8 degrees higher than normal. These conditions led the District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO) to issue an order citing health risks posed by the heatwave, particularly the increase in student illnesses and fainting spells due to heat exhaustion.

Interestingly, the decision to close schools came just hours before Guwahati experienced heavy rainfall. Prior to this closure, districts such as Kamrup Metropolitan, Cachar, and Barpeta had already adjusted school hours to cope with the heatwave. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre of the India Meteorological Department, Guwahati is expected to experience cloudy skies and intermittent rain in the coming days. This development underscores the need for swift and adaptable responses to protect students' well-being as Assam's educational authorities navigate fluctuating and extreme weather conditions.
