According to a notification from the government of Gujarat, admissions into all the engineering institutions in the state will be done based on Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GujCET). As GujCET is making a comeback, entrance to all the engineering colleges in Gujarat will be made on GujCET and Class 12 marks.
Earlier, admissions to engineering colleges in Gujarat were made based on JEE scores, the exam now is however made optional.
Those students who want to compete at the state level for engineering admissions will benefit from this move as they will not be required to compete for engineering seats at the national level with JEE.
According to the notification and reports from the state education minister, the merit list for admissions here will be made by giving 60% weight-age to Class 12 marks and 40% weight-age to GujCET marks.
The State Education Minister, Bhupendrasinh Chudasama also mentioned that considering JEE scores for admissions into state engineering colleges is a waste of monetary funds and also leads to unwanted stress for students who do not want to outside Gujarat for admissions.
JEE Exam has been made optional for those students who seek admissions through the All India quota seats and in universities that only accept JEE scores.
JEE exam scores was made mandatory for admissions into state engineering collegs in Gujarat in 2009.
Since the exam was made available in Gujarati language, a huge number of students from the state were able to crack the exam and gain admissions in IITs and other top engineering colleges in India.
