The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027 registration window is closing soon, with October 5, 2026 set as the last date for candidates to submit their applications without a late fee. IIT Madras, the organising institute for GATE 2027, has extended the regular registration deadline from September 27 to October 5 following requests from applicants.

Candidates who are unable to complete the form by October 5 will have an additional opportunity to apply with a late fee until October 12, 2026. The application process is being conducted through the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) at the official GATE 2027 website.

GATE 2027 will be conducted over three weekends in February 2027. The examinations are scheduled for February 6 and 7, February 13 and 14, and February 20 and 21.
Candidates will be allotted their examination date, session and centre through the official examination process. The city allotment notification is scheduled for January 4, 2027, while the admit card download date is yet to be announced on the official website.
GATE 2027 is open to candidates who are currently studying in the third year or higher of an undergraduate degree programme, or who have completed an approved degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities.
The 2027 edition has also introduced Robotics and Automation (RA) as a new test paper. IIT Madras has made changes to the sectional paper codes for XE, XH and XL and has revised the syllabi for the test papers. Candidates should therefore check the latest syllabus before finalising their preparation.
Another important change is that DigiLocker-based registration is mandatory for Indian nationals. IIT Madras has advised candidates not to delete the verified or unverified DigiLocker account used during registration because future communications will be associated with that account.
Candidates who have not yet completed their registration can apply through the official portal by following these steps:
1. Visit gate2027.iitm.ac.in.
2. Open the GATE 2027 application portal or GOAPS.
3. Complete the required registration using the prescribed DigiLocker process.
4. Enter personal, academic and examination details.
5. Select the required GATE paper and examination city preferences.
6. Upload the photograph, signature, identity proof and other required documents.
7. Pay the application fee online.
8. Check all entered details carefully.
9. Submit the application form.
10. Download and save the confirmation page and payment receipt.
Candidates applying for two papers can select a permitted paper combination within the same application. Applicants should check the official information brochure for document specifications and paper combinations before submitting the form.
The application fee for a single paper varies according to the candidate category. The currently published fee structure lists ₹2,000 for male candidates in the General category and ₹1,000 for female candidates and SC, ST and PwD candidates. An additional late fee applies to applications submitted after the regular deadline.
Candidates should complete the payment within the applicable registration window and verify that the transaction has been successfully recorded.
The GATE 2027 result is scheduled to be announced on March 19, 2027. The official GATE website states that GATE scores are valid for three years from the date of announcement of results. Qualified candidates can use their scores for admission to eligible postgraduate and doctoral programmes, while several public sector organisations also use GATE scores in their recruitment processes.
Candidates yet to register should note that October 5, 2026 is the final date to apply without a late fee. Those requiring additional time can submit the application with the applicable late fee until October 12, 2026.
