The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is one of the most competitive national-level exams for admission to postgraduate engineering programmes in India. Every year, thousands of candidates use their GATE scores to secure M.Tech and research admissions in top institutes such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs).

With the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering 2026 examination scheduled in February and organised by Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, aspirants are already analysing expected admission cutoffs for leading institutions. GATE scores are also used for recruitment in several public sector undertakings and research institutions.
Expected Qualifying Cutoff for GATE 2026
The official qualifying cutoff marks will be released along with the GATE result. However, based on previous year trends, the expected qualifying marks for the general category may range between 28 and 37 marks, depending on the subject. For OBC/EWS candidates, the cutoff may fall around 26-28 marks, while for SC/ST categories it may range between 27-31 marks.
It is important to note that qualifying the exam does not guarantee admission. Institutes such as IITs and NITs usually set significantly higher admission cutoffs depending on the branch, seat availability, and competition level.
Expected GATE Scores for IIT Admissions
Admission to top IITs generally requires a strong GATE score and rank. For competitive branches such as Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering, candidates often need GATE marks above 70-80 or a score of around 750-800+ for leading IITs.
Mid-tier IITs may offer admission with scores in the 650-750 range, depending on the specialization and category.
Expected GATE Scores for NIT Admissions
Admissions to NITs are conducted through the Centralised Counselling for M.Tech (CCMT) process. For top NITs such as NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal, and NIT Warangal, the required GATE score may range between 700 and 800+ for popular branches.
For mid-tier and newer NITs, candidates may secure admission with scores in the 500-650 range, while some programmes may accept scores around 350-500 depending on seat availability and category.
Why Cutoffs Change Every Year
The GATE admission cutoff varies annually due to several factors, including:
- Difficulty level of the exam
- Number of candidates appearing
- Seat availability in participating institutes
- Demand for specific specialisations
Because of these factors, experts advise aspirants to analyse previous year cutoff trends rather than relying on a single year's data.
Strategy for Aspirants
Candidates aiming for admission to top IITs or NITs should target scores well above the qualifying cutoff and focus on building a strong rank in their discipline. Consistent practice, mock tests, and analysing previous year GATE papers can significantly improve performance.
With the competition increasing every year, understanding expected admission cutoffs and score targets can help aspirants plan their preparation strategy more effectively for GATE 2026.
