GCET students upset over fee hike

The students of Galgotias College of Engineering and Technology are highly perturbed about the hike in their tuition fees. The fee has increased by about Rs. 10,000. There have been continued protests by them in the college campus, demanding that the authorities announce an immediate roll-back in the fee structure. The students insist that it is highly unfair that the fee has been increased by 20-30% in the middle of the programme.

Meanwhile, the college authorities stand by the fact that the hike in fees is commensurate with the top-quality of education and facilities provided to the students and that the decision was taken by the appellate authority. They say that proof of the authority's order for the hike is available in the college website. They maintain that low-fee structure would be disadvantageous, since it may effect the functioning of the institute.

The police officers in the area have tried to settle the unrest by calling in a meeting of student representatives with the college authorities, but the students have refused. The college fee was last revised three years ago.

Galgotias College of Engineering and Technology (GCET) is a self-financed engineering college, situated in Greater Noida, NCR, India. The institute is affiliated to Mahamaya Technical University, Noida and the students are admitted on the basis of State Entrance Examination - UPTU (commonly known as UPSEE). The college was earlier affiliated to Uttar Pradesh Technical University until 2010, when the university was bifurcated and the institute came under the jurisdiction of the current university.
