From Classroom to Workplace: The PM Internship Scheme Explained

In the Union Budget 2024-25, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced a groundbreaking internship scheme aimed specifically at the skill development of the youth. This initiative is a crucial component of the Prime Minister's comprehensive package designed to bolster employment and skill development on a national scale. Recognizing the pressing need to equip the younger generation with practical skills and real-world experience, this scheme is set to provide substantial opportunities for hands-on learning and professional growth.

What is the PM Internship Scheme?

The PM Internship Scheme is a comprehensive program designed to provide internship opportunities to one crore youth in 500 top companies across India over the next five years. This initiative aims to offer young individuals exposure to real-life business environments, varied professions, and employment opportunities.

How Will the Scheme Work?

The scheme will be implemented in two phases:

  • Phase 1: Lasts two years.
  • Phase 2: Spans three years.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Age: 21-24 years
  • Not currently employed or engaged in full-time education.
  • Exclusions: Graduates from IIT, IIM, IISER, CA, CMA, etc., and candidates with family members in government jobs or who are income tax assessees.

Internship Experience:

  • Duration: 12 months
  • Stipend: ₹5000 per month
  • One-time Assistance: ₹6000
  • Interns will spend at least half of their time in an actual working environment, gaining practical work experience and participating in skill development sessions.

Why was the Scheme Introduced?

The scheme aims to tackle youth unemployment by equipping young individuals with essential skills for future employment opportunities. By providing internships in top companies, the scheme intends to bridge the gap between education and employment, ensuring that youth are job-ready.

Company Participation

Companies participating in the scheme will bear the training costs for interns, with 10 percent of these costs covered by their corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds. Companies must provide practical working experience related to their core business functions. If unable to do so, they must partner with other companies in their supply chain or industry group.

Application Process

The application process will be managed through an online portal, with further details to be disclosed. This streamlined approach will ensure that eligible candidates can easily apply for the internship opportunities. A candidate could apply for internship only once during a financial year. The applicants who do not fulfill the eligibility conditions, their applications shall be rejected by the system automatically. The selected applicant will have to produce original mark sheets and NOC from the college/institution at the time of joining, failing which his/her candidature shall be cancelled.

All the applications received online will be made available online to the concerned HR Heads or HR Consultants of the listed companies in the portal for further scrutiny and selection of eligible candidates.

Expected Impact

This initiative is part of a broader plan to create employment for approximately 4.1 crore youth over the next five years, with an allocation of ₹2 lakh crore.
