The 82-year-old pioneer in the field of heart surgery, Dr. P. Venugopal, passed away on 8th October 2024. As the first heart transplant cardiologist in India, he created history and has a lasting impact on the medical field. Dr. Venugopal significantly improved cardiac care in India and touched many lives during his distinguished career, doing over 50,000 successful heart surgeries.
Hailing from Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh, Dr. Venugopal was a visionary who played a crucial role in introducing and adapting innovative Western cardiac surgical techniques in India during the early 1970s. His dedication and expertise earned him prominent positions at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where he served as the head of the Cardiothoracic Centre, dean, and ultimately, director. His life and work reflect the significant medical and political changes India underwent over several decades.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to medicine, Dr. Venugopal was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1998, one of the highest civilian honors in the country. His legacy was further immortalized in 2023 with the release of his memoirs titled 'Heartfelt,' co-authored with his wife, Priya Sarkar. This insightful book details his remarkable journey and the evolution of cardiac care in India.
Dr. Venugopal's final rites are scheduled for Wednesday at 3 PM at the Lodhi Road Crematorium, where family, friends, and admirers will gather to pay their respects to a true pioneer of cardiac surgery. While his passing marks the end of an era in Indian medicine, his groundbreaking work and the lives he saved will continue to inspire future generations of medical professionals. His contributions to the field of cardiac surgery will be remembered and cherished as a testament to his unwavering commitment to saving lives.
