Appearing for the CAT does not guarantee that, every student would get admission in the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). CAT is the only qualifying examination for admission to postgraduate programmes in IIMs. Some of the top B-schools in India admit the students based on their CAT scores.

Admission to IIMs is independent on each other. Each IIM would conduct some processes to admit the students into IIMs, which includes:
- Written Ability Test (WAT)
- Group Discussion (GD)
- Personal Interview (PI)
The candidates' performance in CAT is an important component in the admission process. IIMs may use previous academic performance of the candidates, relevant work experience and other similar inputs in short-listing and ranking of candidates at various stages of the admission process.
The processes, academic cut-offs and the weights allocated to the evaluation parameters may vary across IIMs. For more information you may refer the admissions policies of IIMs from their respective websites.
List of shortlisted candidates for the next level of selection will be made available on the individual IIM websites. Each IIM will send interview letters to the short listed candidates directly. The criteria for short-listing varies in different IIMs.
