DUSU Election Results 2024 to be Announced on November 21

After the prolonged delay, the much-awaited results of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) 2024 elections are finally on the horizon and it will be announced on November 21. The results, which were originally scheduled to be declared following the September 27 elections, have been postponed due to legal and administrative issues, particularly the widespread defacement of public spaces with campaign materials. The delay, however, is nearing its end, as the Delhi High Court recently lifted the stay on announcing the results, allowing the counting process to move forward.

DUSU Election Result 2024 Countdown Begins

The elections, which saw a significant decrease in student participation, were initially set to be finalized by September 28, 2024. However, the public defacement of properties during the election campaign raised serious concerns, prompting the High Court to intervene. In an effort to ensure the integrity of the democratic process and protect public spaces, the court imposed a temporary halt on announcing the results. This intervention pushed the finalization of results after the cleanup of campaign materials was mandated.

The countdown is now in full swing as the university prepares for the vote counting, set to begin at 8:30 AM on November 21 at the DU Conference Centre. To ensure transparency and fairness, an Election Commission (EC) team will oversee the process. The university has also employed Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for the central panel elections, which include the key positions of president, vice president, secretary, and joint secretary. Ballots for college representatives will be counted separately, using traditional ballot papers.

All the election materials, including EVMs and ballot boxes, have been securely stored. The EVMs are housed in a strong room within the university's examination department, constantly monitored by police personnel. Ballot boxes for college representatives are safely kept at the respective colleges, further ensuring security during the counting process.

Despite the high-profile nature of the DUSU elections, this year saw a concerning decline in student engagement, with only 51,379 out of the 1.45 lakh eligible voters casting their votes. This marks the lowest voter turnout in over a decade, sparking debates about the reasons behind such apathy. The low turnout, along with the legal intervention, has undoubtedly overshadowed what is typically an important event in the university's calendar.

In preparation for the counting day, university officials have worked diligently to ensure all election materials are in place and secure. As a measure of transparency, the sealed EVMs and ballot boxes will be opened in the presence of the Election Commission's team. This process will help guarantee the credibility of the results and allay any concerns of tampering.

The university's decision to implement EVMs for the central panel elections and ballot papers for college representatives reflects a careful approach to maintaining fairness in the election process. With police oversight and strong room storage for the EVMs, the university has left no stone unturned in ensuring the integrity of this year's elections.

With the election results set to be declared by November 26, the university community is eagerly anticipating the outcome. Students, faculty, and administration alike are keen to see which student leaders will rise to represent them in the DUSU. Despite the hurdles faced this year, including the legal challenges and a record-low voter turnout, the focus now shifts to how these leaders will address the pressing issues within the university, from campus facilities to student welfare.
