These internships are designed to provide real-world exposure to research and development work in defence technology, scientific analysis, experimental projects and allied areas, making them highly valuable for students planning research-oriented careers.

Who Can Apply

The paid internship programme is open to:

  • Undergraduate engineering students (B.E./B.Tech)
  • Postgraduate engineering students (M.E./M.Tech)
  • Postgraduate science students (M.Sc and related disciplines)
  • Final-year postgraduate students in psychology

Students must be enrolled in a regular, full-time course at a recognised Indian university or institute, with a strong academic record.

Duration and Stipend

  • Internship Duration: 6 months of project training or research work
  • Monthly Stipend: ₹5,000 per month
  • Stipend Payment: Total stipend will be paid in two equal instalments ₹15,000 after successful completion of the first three months and ₹15,000 after completing six months, subject to minimum attendance requirements.

This structure ensures that students are fairly compensated while gaining meaningful experience at leading research labs.

Selection Process

Selection is based on academic performance and merit. Interested candidates are typically required to submit a brief biodata (not more than 300 words) highlighting their academic achievements, major projects and professional memberships (if any). In many cases, applications are forwarded through the institution's principal or director, who recommends meritorious students. Shortlisted candidates may be interviewed via video conference or telephone as part of the final selection process.

Once selected, candidates receive details about the joining process, including undertaking forms and indemnity bonds that must be signed by the student and an institutional authority.

Why This Internship Matters

Internships at DRDO offer a rare opportunity to work under senior scientists on cutting-edge national defence research, encompassing domains such as:

  • Advanced materials and electronics
  • Defence systems and weapon technologies
