Dr. Saroj Chooramani Gopal, 79-Year-Old Padma Shri Awardee, Returns to the Classroom

The life of Dr. Saroj Chooramani Gopal, the pioneer Indian woman with a specialization in paediatric surgery, serves as a truly inspirational testament to the timeless pursuit of knowledge, showcasing that learning knows no age bounds.

Dr. Saroj Chooramani Gopal is a trailblazer in multiple domains. She holds the distinction of being the inaugural female postgraduate student in general surgery at her Agra college, the first Indian woman with a superspeciality in paediatric surgery, and the pioneering woman to serve as the Vice-Chancellor of Lucknow's King George's Medical University. Despite being 79 years old, Dr. Gopal has rekindled her enthusiasm and embarked on a new academic venture in 2024. She has officially commenced her Ph.D. journey at IIT Kanpur, a renowned public institute of technology.

Her research, now based in IIT Kanpur's Biological Sciences and Bioengineering Department, is focused on investigating the potential of utilizing stem cells derived from either bone marrow or abdominal lining to facilitate the regeneration of damaged spinal nerves. This groundbreaking work carries the promise of aiding individuals with spinal injuries or vertebral damage in reclaiming their mobility.

Throughout her illustrious career, Dr. Gopal has been a driving force in paediatric surgery, spearheading advancements through innovative techniques and cost-effective solutions to ensure accessibility, particularly for the underprivileged. Among her notable contributions are a pioneering stent designed for hydrocephalus (the accumulation of fluid in the brain) and an affordable humidifier customized for infants.
According to an Indian Express report, Dr. Gopal has received the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award in the Republic of India. Additionally, she has been honoured with the Dr. BC Roy Award, the country's highest recognition for physicians.
