Delhi University to Reserve Postgraduate Seats for Single Girl Children from 2025-26

Delhi University is taking a bold step towards gender equality in education by proposing a new reservation policy aimed at empowering single girl children. Beginning with the 2025-26 academic year, the university plans to reserve one seat in each of its 77 postgraduate programs specifically for single girl children. This initiative is set for discussion in the upcoming academic council meeting, and if approved, it will build upon the university's ongoing efforts to support female education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

DU to Reserve PG Seats for Single Girl Children

Promoting Higher Education for Women

The proposed policy follows Delhi University's existing undergraduate quota for single girl children, introduced during the 2023-24 admission cycle. This undergraduate reservation facilitated 764 admissions across 69 colleges, showcasing the university's commitment to encouraging female education. Extending this initiative to postgraduate courses highlights a significant move to foster gender inclusivity in higher education.

Addressing Challenges in Postgraduate Admissions

Postgraduate admissions at Delhi University are notoriously competitive, with over 90,000 applicants vying for approximately 13,500 seats in the 2023-24 cycle. Admission is based on the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) followed by the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS), ensuring a rigorous and transparent process. By reserving seats for single girl children, the university seeks to ease barriers and inspire more women to pursue advanced degrees.

Inclusivity Beyond Gender

In addition to the single girl child quota, Delhi University also reserves seats for other underrepresented categories, including:

  • Sports participants
  • Persons with Disabilities (PwD)
  • Children and Widows of Armed Forces Personnel (CW)
  • Orphaned Children

This inclusive approach underscores the university's dedication to equitable access for all students, creating a diverse and vibrant academic environment.

University officials are optimistic about the proposed policy, believing it will encourage more single girl children to dream big and achieve their academic aspirations. "This initiative reflects our broader commitment to gender equality," one official stated. "By creating targeted opportunities, we aim to uplift students and contribute to societal progress."

Step Towards Societal Change

This move represents more than just a change in university policy; it's a step toward greater societal progress. By reserving postgraduate seats for single girl children, Delhi University is sending a strong message about the importance of empowering women through education.

As this proposal awaits approval, it symbolizes hope for countless young women striving to break barriers and excel in their chosen fields. Delhi University's continued efforts to expand opportunities for underrepresented groups reaffirm its role as a leader in shaping a more inclusive and equitable future for education in India.
