Delhi University Admission 2021 Will Be Based On Merit, Says Vice Chancellor

"These are extraordinary situations yet there will be some way to judge the merit. Central Universities Common Entrance Test which will be based on Pan-India merit may be a good method," said the acting VC P.C. Joshi.

Delhi University would adjust its admission process to extraordinary circumstances without compromising on Merit, said the acting Vice-Chancellor P.C. Joshi after the cancellation of Class 12 board exams, adding that the Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET) could be a good method.

Delhi University Admission Will Be Based On Merit

Mr. Joshi added that discussions would be held with the Admission Committee and the University Academic Council to finalise the admission process in undergraduate courses. The statement came after the CBSE and CISCE announced the cancellation of Class 12 board examinations in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In Delhi University about 98 Percent of the applicants are CBSE students.

"These are extraordinary situations yet there will be some way to judge the merit. Central Universities Common Entrance Test which will be based on Pan-India merit may be a good method. Delhi University will not compromise on merit. We will find out some methods and will adjust to the new situation. We'll wait and see what criteria the board comes out to evaluate students," he said.

Mr. Joshi is a member of the CUCET Committee, which had given its report to the Ministry of Education. The decision to conduct the Common Entrance Test for all the central universities is pending.

DU Chairperson-Admissions, Prof. Rajeev Gupta said, "Delhi University is in full support of the decision taken by the Government of India to cancel the upcoming CBSE Board Examinations considering the COVID-19 pandemic across the country. The University also knows that the health and safety of the students is very important. Delhi University is awaiting the decision of CBSE regarding the announcement of results."

Joint Director of Delhi University Computer Centre (DUCC), Professor Sanjeev Singh said that the university is expected to take admissions of students on the basis of CUCET after the Ministry of Education announces the guidelines.

He said, "We are all prepared. We will be ready as soon as we get the guidelines."

DU holds entrance tests for admission to nine undergraduate courses, under normal circumstances. These tests are conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 01, 2021, cancelled the CBSE Class 12 board exams amid a nationwide COVID-19 pandemic, stressing that the decision was taken in the interest of students, and the concern among students, parents, and teachers should be put to an end.

According to its secretary Gerry Arathoon, this year, the CISCE has also decided to cancel the Class 12 board exams due to the COVID-19 situation.
