Delhi Launches 'Vidya Vahini' Scheme; Over 3,000 Class 9 Girls Receive Free Bicycles
The Delhi Government has launched the 'Vidya Vahini' Scheme, a new initiative aimed at improving school access and promoting girls' education across the national capital. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated the programme on Friday by distributing free bicycles to more than 3,000 Class 9 girl students studying in Delhi government schools.
The launch event was held at the East Vinod Nagar Sports Complex, where the Chief Minister interacted with students and encouraged them to continue their education with confidence. The government has announced that the scheme will eventually benefit around 1.40 lakh eligible Class 9 girls across Delhi through a phased distribution process.
Scheme Aims to Improve Girls' Access to Education
The Vidya Vahini Scheme has been introduced to remove transportation barriers that often prevent girls from attending school regularly. By providing bicycles, the Delhi Government hopes to make commuting safer, more convenient, and affordable for students who travel long distances to their schools.
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the bicycle is more than just a means of transport-it is a symbol of dignity, independence, and opportunity for young girls. She noted that the initiative will help improve attendance, reduce dropout rates, and give parents greater confidence about their daughters' daily travel.
Around 1.40 Lakh Students to Benefit
According to the Delhi Government, approximately 1.40 lakh Class 9 girl students enrolled in government schools will receive bicycles under the scheme in multiple phases. The government has earmarked around ₹90 crore for implementing the programme.
The phased rollout is intended to ensure smooth distribution while covering eligible students across different districts of the national capital.
Government's Focus on Girls' Empowerment
Education Minister Ashish Sood, Union Minister of State and Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra, Patparganj MLA Ravinder Singh Negi, and senior officials from the Education Department were also present during the launch ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, Education Minister Ashish Sood said many girls face transportation-related challenges after entering secondary school. The Vidya Vahini Scheme has been designed to address these issues and ensure that financial or commuting difficulties do not interrupt their education.
The government believes that providing bicycles will not only improve attendance but also encourage girls to continue their studies through higher classes.

Officials expect the initiative to have several positive outcomes, including:
