Delhi Government Plans Shifting Anganwadi Centres to MCD Schools Within 2 Years

The Delhi government has initiated the process of shifting Anganwadi centres operating from rented premises to Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) school buildings. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the centres will be developed in better and more permanent facilities over the next two years.

The announcement was made on September 24, 2026, while honouring Anganwadi workers and helpers under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan during the 9th National Nutrition Month.

According to Gupta, Delhi has nearly 10,870 Anganwadi centres, while the Delhi government's Economic Survey 2025-26 recorded more than 10,750 operational centres. The government also plans to include workers associated with Palna centres in the recognition initiative.

Rented Anganwadi Centres to Shift to MCD Schools

The proposed relocation is aimed at addressing concerns regarding Anganwadi centres functioning from rented premises. Gupta said shifting these centres to MCD school campuses would provide children with access to facilities such as toilets, parks and play areas.

The Chief Minister said the government plans to develop the centres in better and permanent buildings during the next two years. The move is also expected to provide Anganwadi workers with improved working spaces.

Delhi Anganwadi Centres: Key Details

The government has not indicated how many rented centres will be shifted first or provided a centre-wise implementation schedule.

Anganwadi Workers' Honorarium to Be Increased

Gupta also said that the government would increase the honorarium of Anganwadi workers and improve their working conditions. However, the government has not specified the proposed increase in the honorarium or a timeline for implementing it.

The announcement comes alongside a recognition initiative for Anganwadi workers and helpers. Appreciation and felicitation programmes are being planned across Delhi's 70 assembly constituencies under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan.

Role of Anganwadi Workers in Delhi

According to the Chief Minister, Anganwadi workers perform several community-level responsibilities. These include supporting child care and nutrition, reaching out to pregnant women, conducting surveys, assisting vaccination drives, maintaining data and helping eligible families access government services.

The Seva Sankalp Abhiyan is also intended to facilitate interaction between the government and grassroots workers and help officials understand their concerns, Gupta said. The latest announcement therefore combines infrastructure-related plans for Anganwadi centres with measures focused on recognising workers and improving their working conditions.
