Dehradun Schools, Anganwadi Centres Closed Amid Heavy Rainfall Forecast

Dehradun schools and Anganwadi centres will remain closed on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, following a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, lightning and extremely heavy rain in parts of the district.

The District Magistrate and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, Dehradun, announced the one-day closure as a precautionary measure after an Orange Alert was issued.

Schools Closed for Classes 1 to 12

As per the order issued on August 31, all government, private and non-government schools from Classes 1 to 12 across Dehradun district will remain closed on September 1.

The decision was taken after the latest weather forecast and nowcast indicated the possibility of intense rainfall and lightning over the next 24 hours. Authorities said the adverse weather could increase the risk of untoward incidents and affect the safety of students and staff.

Anganwadi Centres Also Closed

The closure order also applies to Anganwadi centres across Dehradun district. The Chief Education Officer and District Programme Officer have been instructed to ensure that the order is implemented across all concerned educational institutions and centres.

The administration has described the closure as a disaster mitigation measure in view of the anticipated weather conditions.

Ganga Water Level Rises in Rishikesh

Meanwhile, continuous rainfall in the hilly areas of the Garhwal division has led to a rise in the water level of the Ganga at Rishikesh.

The river was reported to be flowing at a strong pace near Triveni Ghat, although officials from the Central Water Commission said the water level remained below the warning mark.

As a precaution, teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Water Police and Disaster Relief Teams have been deployed at major ghats in Rishikesh, Muni Ki Reti and Lakshman Jhula.

Dehradun Weather Alert and School Holiday

The September 1 closure is specifically linked to the prevailing heavy rainfall forecast and Orange Alert. Students and parents should follow the district administration's instructions and avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather.

Schools are expected to resume according to their regular schedule unless authorities issue a further closure order.
