Tax Relief Alert: CBDT Extends Audit and ITR Deadlines for AY 2026-27

India’s tax department has given audit-case taxpayers breathing room. For Assessment Year 2026–27, the Central Board of Direct Taxes extended the tax audit report deadline to 21 October 2026 and the income tax return deadline to 21 November 2026. Chartered Accountants should immediately replan client sign‑offs and reconciliations.

The relief applies to persons at Serial No. 2 under Explanation 2 to Section 139(1): companies, other assessees whose accounts require audit, and working partners of audited firms. Transfer pricing cases remain on the 30 November track, unless separately notified. “A formal order/notification … is being issued separately.”

CBDT Extends Tax Audit And ITR Deadlines

CBDT deadline extension AY 2026–27: exact new dates

FilingOriginal dateExtended date
Tax Audit Report (Form 3CA/3CB–3CD)30 September 202621 October 2026
ITR for audit cases (Section 139(1), S. No. 2)31 October 202621 November 2026
ITR where Section 92E applies30 November 2026No change announced

The audit “specified date” now aligns with 21 October, one month before the extended ITR deadline for audit cases. This preserves the legal sequencing of audit before return filing and gives teams three additional weeks to finish tie‑outs, disclosures and sign‑offs with fewer last‑minute risks.

Who is covered under audit cases

Covers companies, LLPs, firms, trusts and others whose accounts are audited under the Income‑tax Act or any other law, plus working partners of such firms. Transfer pricing assessees stay on their usual calendar unless CBDT widens coverage in the forthcoming order.

Impact on Form 3CA/3CB–3CD and portal checks

Audit forms remain 3CA/3CB with 3CD particulars. Ensure Unique Document Identification Number is generated on the signing date, and match it on the e‑filing portal. Validation rules still enforce audit‑date logic against the chosen due date; plan DSC or electronic verification accordingly.

Interest implications, e‑verification and practical guardrails

No interest relief is announced. Interest under Section 234A applies only if you file after the new due date; advance tax interest under Sections 234B and 234C remains per law. Remember the 30‑day e‑verification rule, or the return risks becoming invalid despite timely upload.

What’s not extended yet, and what to watch

Non‑audit due dates are unchanged: 31 July for salaried individuals and 31 August for non‑audit business and certain trusts. Transfer pricing ITR remains due 30 November; its specified date is 31 October. Watch for CBDT’s formal Section 119 order for any scope changes.

For students, young professionals, and founders juggling audits with placements or fundraising, this buffer is vital. Prioritise closing books, GST‑ITR reconciliations, TDS/TCS matches, lender covenants, board approvals, UDINs, and partner sign‑offs by 21 October. Then lock computations and e‑verify within 30 days, targeting safe filings well before 21 November.
