Bihar Heatwave: Patna Schools Up to Class 8 Closed Till June 30; DM Issues Fresh Order

The Patna district administration has extended the closure of all government and private schools, including pre-schools, up to Class 8 till June 30, 2026, due to the ongoing heatwave and soaring temperatures across the district. The decision was taken to safeguard students from the adverse health effects caused by extreme weather conditions.

Bihar Heatwave: Patna Schools Up to Class 8 Closed

The order was issued by District Magistrate (DM) Kundan Kumar on June 28, 2026, after reviewing the prevailing weather conditions. According to the administration, the persistent heatwave poses a serious threat to the health and safety of young children, making it necessary to suspend physical academic activities for the next two days.

Schools to Remain Closed Till June 30

As per the latest directive, all academic activities for pre-school to Class 8 students in government, government-aided, and private schools across Patna district will remain suspended from June 29 to June 30, 2026. The order has been issued under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act to ensure the well-being of school-going children.

However, schools may continue administrative work or online learning activities, if deemed necessary, while ensuring students are not required to attend classes physically.

Reason Behind the Decision

Patna and several other districts in Bihar have been witnessing extremely high daytime temperatures, accompanied by heatwave conditions over the past several days. Meteorological forecasts indicate that the temperature is likely to remain significantly above normal, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heatstroke, especially among young children.

Considering these weather conditions, the district administration decided to extend the suspension of classroom teaching to minimize students' exposure to extreme heat.

Instructions Issued to Schools

The district administration has directed all educational institutions to strictly comply with the order. Schools have been instructed to:

  • Suspend physical classes for students up to Class 8 till June 30.
  • Reschedule academic activities after weather conditions improve.
  • Ensure the safety and health of students and staff.
  • Follow any further directions issued by the district administration.

Failure to comply with the order may invite appropriate action under applicable rules.

Advisory for Parents and Students

Authorities have advised parents to keep children indoors during peak afternoon hours, encourage adequate water intake, and avoid outdoor activities until temperatures return to normal. Students are also advised to wear light clothing, consume plenty of fluids, and remain alert to symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

Weather Situation in Bihar

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that heatwave conditions may persist in several parts of Bihar over the next few days. Residents have been advised to take necessary precautions and avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day.

The Patna district administration stated that further decisions regarding the reopening of schools will be taken after reviewing the prevailing weather conditions and updated IMD forecasts. Until then, schools up to Class 8 will remain closed to ensure the safety of children.
