Auckland University of Technology (AUT) is making waves with its groundbreaking summer school course, "Taylor Swift: Communications Professional," the first of its kind in Australasia. Announced on September 5, this course will delve into the intricate world of Taylor Swift's career through the lens of modern communication studies, offered by AUT's School of Communication Studies.

This innovative course is designed to critically analyze Taylor Swift's 18-year journey in the spotlight. From November 18 to December 13, students will explore her contributions to visual and audio content, branding strategies, and overall communication principles. It's a unique opportunity to apply communication theories to one of the most influential figures in pop culture today.
The course's inception follows the remarkable success of Swiftposium, an academic conference held in February 2024. Co-funded by AUT and partner universities in Australia, this conference received an enthusiastic response from high-school students and fans, highlighting Swift's extensive impact on popular culture.
Senior lecturer Rebecca Trelease (Te Āti Haunui a Pāpārangi) highlighted the importance of understanding Swift's communication prowess. "Taylor Swift's career showcases not just musical talent but also exceptional communication skills that have shaped her public image," Trelease said. "Our course aims to explore these strategies and their impact on her media presence."
Course Details
The "Taylor Swift: Communications Professional" course will run three days a week at AUT's City Campus, aligning with Taylor Swift's 35th birthday. If there's enough interest, an online version might be made available for those unable to attend in person.
Trelease expressed excitement about the course's potential, saying, "This course caters to a broad audience, from high school students eager to get a head start on their university education to professionals looking to deepen their understanding of communication strategies."
This course reflects a growing trend of academic interest in analyzing contemporary pop culture figures through various disciplinary lenses.
