Arizona State University (ASU) is poised to revolutionize higher education in India, with plans to create a state-of-the-art, AI-powered "agentic" university. Michael M Crow, the President of ASU, shared insights into the university's ambitious endeavors during his recent visit, where he announced partnerships with Indian universities. ASU is broadening its educational reach in India, building upon existing collaborations with five universities across the country, including Chitkara University in Punjab and Shiv Nadar University in Greater Noida, among others.

The initiative aims to fuse advanced digital learning resources with dual-degree programs, thereby providing Indian students unprecedented access to American and Indian educational methodologies. "Our goal is to offer honour students in India simultaneous exposure to American and Indian educational pedagogies through ASU's digital learning repository. Ultimately, many of these students will have the opportunity to complete a dual-degree program at ASU in the US," Crow explained. This innovative approach is in direct response to India's New Education Policy (NEP) and the revised norms by the University Grants Commission (UGC) that now permit foreign universities to establish campuses in India.
Expanding Educational Frontiers
ASU's commitment to enhancing education in India doesn't stop at creating an "agentic" university. The institution hosts nearly 7,000 Indian students at its campus in the United States, emphasizing India as its largest source of international students. Additionally, thousands of Indian students are benefiting from ASU-affiliated centres across India. "In India, the number of students enrolled at our collaborative centres is in the low thousands and then we have 7000 Indian students enrolled at ASU in the United States," Crow highlighted. The partnerships with Indian universities not only aim to increase this number but also to provide students with access to advanced digital learning platforms and intelligent tutoring systems.
These educational collaborations facilitate a curriculum that, while tailored to local needs, aligns with global standards. Crow added, "Our approach is to provide high-performing Indian students with a world-class education at an affordable cost while ensuring seamless transition opportunities to ASU in the US." This strategy underscores the importance of making high-quality education accessible and adaptable, preparing students for a rapidly changing global landscape.
A Global Vision for Education
Discussing the broader implications of ASU's initiatives, Crow emphasized the importance of a diversified and flexible education system that melds theoretical learning with practical application. He pointed out the necessity for students to be well-rounded, capable of adapting to societal shifts and technological advancements, by engaging in a wide range of subjects including history, politics, and the arts. Crow's vision for education extends beyond traditional boundaries, advocating for a holistic approach that fosters innovation and research.
Despite the remarkable strides India has made in education over the past 75 years, Crow believes there is room for significant improvement, particularly in research output and innovation. He reaffirmed the strong educational ties between India and the US, bolstered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's emphasis on technology-driven development. "As the world's two largest democracies, India and the US are natural partners in education and innovation. By strengthening collaborations, we can drive progress for both nations," Crow asserted. This statement reflects ASU's broader ambition to play a pivotal role in the evolving landscape of US-India educational partnerships, aiming to shape the future of higher education in both countries.
In conclusion, Arizona State University's extensive plans, ranging from establishing advanced AI-enhanced institutions in India to expanding dual-degree programs and digital learning resources, mark a significant step towards redefining higher education. By leveraging technology and fostering international collaborations, ASU aims to equip students in India with the tools necessary to thrive in a globalized world, embodying an educational model that is both innovative and inclusive.
