AICTE Launches Rs 25 Crore Doctoral Fellowship Programme

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has launched the AICTE Innovation and Entrepreneurship Doctoral Fellowship Programme (AIEDFP) to encourage PhD research focused on innovation, entrepreneurship and real-world applications.

AICTE Launches Rs 25 Crore Doctoral Fellowship Pro

The initiative aims to help doctoral scholars develop research that can translate into practical solutions, new technologies, technology transfer and business opportunities.

The programme has a projected financial outlay of Rs 25 crore over five years and is expected to support 150 PhD fellowships. It was launched by AICTE Chairman Prof Yogesh Singh and Member Secretary Prof Shyama Rath.

Focus on Research with Real-World Impact

The AIEDFP seeks to encourage doctoral scholars to work on research problems with clear practical relevance. Instead of limiting research outcomes to academic publications and laboratory work, the programme aims to support projects that can address challenges faced by industries, startups and communities.

The fellowship will promote research with potential for innovation, technology transfer, commercialisation and entrepreneurship. Scholars will be encouraged to develop ideas that can eventually contribute to products, services, technologies or solutions with wider social and economic applications.

Strengthening Industry and Startup Connections

Another key objective of the AIEDFP is to strengthen collaboration between higher education institutions, industry and the startup ecosystem. By supporting doctoral research with scalable and practical outcomes, AICTE aims to create a stronger pathway for academic ideas to move from laboratories towards the marketplace and society.

The initiative is also expected to encourage researchers to consider entrepreneurship and commercialisation as possible outcomes of doctoral research. This can help create an ecosystem in which universities contribute not only to knowledge creation but also to innovation and economic development.

AIEDFP and NEP 2020 Objectives

The fellowship programme aligns with the broader objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises multidisciplinary education, research, innovation, entrepreneurship and stronger links between academia and industry.

Through AIEDFP, AICTE aims to give doctoral scholars greater opportunities to pursue research that has measurable impact beyond academic settings. The programme could therefore play a role in strengthening India's innovation ecosystem while encouraging PhD research that responds to emerging technological, industrial and societal needs.
